Silicon Valley Comes to the UK 2014 Scale Up Club list announced

Fast growth, high potential companies invited to take part in CEO Summit

Friday 21st November 2014, London: Silicon Valley Comes to the UK (‘SVC2UK’) has today announced the 60 companies who have been invited to join the Scale Up Club this year, including Amplience, Appear Here, Blippar, CertiVox, CityFibre, Conversocial, Glow, Genius, Jolla, Secretsales, Spark Energy, and Somo.

The Scale Up Club, formerly known as the SVC2UK 100 Club, celebrates the most-promising businesses from across Europe, with the potential to reach £100m revenue in the next 3-5 years. The CEOs of these innovative and inspirational businesses join the SVC2UK Scale Up Club alumni, and will take part in a year-round programme of mentoring sessions, networking and workshops - starting today with the CEO Summit at the London Stock Exchange.

The CEO Summit is SVC2UK’s flagship event, with leading Silicon Valley and UK entrepreneurs – for example from Facebook, Google, Edmodo, Noodle Education, Intuitive Surgical, MIO and August Capital - offering their time as mentors in small workshops to help CEOs who are scaling companies to address their current barriers to scale.

Today is the final day of the 2014 SVC2UK programme of events in London and Cambridge – kicked off by the launch of Sherry Coutu’s Scale Up Report on Monday - dedicated to inspiring and supporting European entrepreneurs so they can ‘scale up’ their companies most effectively.

As the Scale Up Report says, if the UK manages to close the scale-up gap, the country will secure significant economic value and the competitive advantage of Britain for generations to come, including:

  • In the short-term, RBS analysis suggests an additional 238,000 jobs and £38 billion additional turnover is possible within three years of reversing the scale-up gap.

  • In the medium-term, Nesta research shows a possible boost of £96 billion per annum is possible.

  • Long-term analysis by Deloitte shows a potential of £225 billion additional GVA and 150,000 net jobs by 2034.

SVC2UK is a not-for-profit, volunteer-led series of events bringing together early stage investors, serial business leaders and entrepreneurs for discussion, debate and mentoring. The focus is on supporting businesses in the process of scaling-up.

Sherry Coutu CBE, serial entrepreneur, angel investor and a founder of SVC2UK, said, “There has never been a better time to support the scale up of UK companies. SVC2UK provides a unique blend of mentoring, inspiration and high-quality networking to help CEOs scale up fast.  We are grateful to the London Stock Exchange for hosting our scale up event and providing the environment to foster ambitious goals.  We are excited about the impact this summit will have on the companies involved and on the UK economy as a whole.”

About SVC2UK

SVC2UK is a not-for-profit programme led by volunteers and run by students; and convened in schools and universities. It was founded by Sherry Coutu, Reid Hoffman and Ellen Levy. Now in its eight year, SVC2UK brings together the top entrepreneurs and VCs from Silicon Valley with students, early stage CEOs, serial entrepreneurs, and policymakers in the UK with the singular goal of inspiring entrepreneurship, innovation, and economic prosperity. The annual summit takes place in November each year with successful serial entrepreneurs from Silicon Valley visiting London and Cambridge.

In 2014 a series of round table workshops have been held for the SVC2UK CEO 100 Club to help them to scale up their businesses, a Science Summit was held with the Royal Society and 17 female CEOs were hosted on a trade mission to Silicon Valley in partnership with UKTI.
