Why stumbling into PR after university was the best thing to ever happen to me

Agency

The final year of my university degree was disrupted by a pandemic that crippled our global economy and pushed youth unemployment back up to levels last seen in 2008 – what a time to try and find a job! Having found myself in a job and a sector I love, it’s time to count my lucky stars.

I am so honored and thrilled to be joining FieldHouse as its newest Senior Account Executive. I am ever so grateful that I have been given this brilliant opportunity to take on an increased position of responsibility at a respected firm like FieldHouse. Having very much enjoyed the interview process, I would like to thank Cordelia and my new team for entrusting me with their support. I look forward to working hard so that I can repay that support in kind.

I was amazed to find myself in a PR role after university, having had little to no idea about what I wanted to do. The days of dreaming of becoming an elite athlete were now long gone, though I am still hopeful that my beloved Arsenal will require a 5ft 9 goalkeeper in the near future. A post-university gap year was also taken off the menu due to hardcore travel restrictions, so I was extremely fortunate to find a job at a small PR firm just four months post-university. Working with luxury brands such as Kurt Geiger, Nyetimber, and Rocco Forte Hotels, as well as working on campaigns for financial services institutions and tech companies, and providing reputation management support for high net worth clients and royalty, it was a whirlwind of a job. As my boss said after I left, “Congratulations, you’ve learnt how to actually work.”

Having developed a wide range of skills and knowledge in an industry I previously knew little about, I was hooked. It became clear to me that PR could be my niche. Moving in 2022 to a specialist tech PR agency helped me realise that I preferred working within a specific sector rather than trying to cover all bases. Those nine months working with tech companies was a joy and is instrumental in my now being here at FieldHouse.

While applying for Senior Account Executive roles, FieldHouse stood well clear of any other opportunities I was sent by recruiters. I was taken by the outstanding work FieldHouse undertakes and all the other activities that it takes on. Continuing to work with innovative tech companies, hopefully my transition into my new role will be far easier than it could have been!
